Srilankan Airlines is the main airline in Sri Lanka. The airline was founded in 1979 by the government after the closure of Air Ceylon, at which time it was named Air Lanka. By 1990, Air Lanka was serving 26 destinations. In 1998, it was privatised in favour of the Dubai-based Emirates Group. Once Emirates took over 43.6% of Air Lanka, the airline’s image and fleet was revamped. The Srilankan Airlines brand was launched.
Half of Srilankan Airlines’ fleet was disabled at the end of July 2001 due to a terrorist attack at Bandaranaike airport. In the years following this incident, Srilankan Airlines continued to expand to become the largest carrier flying to India. Serving 11 destinations with up to 100 flights a week. In 2008 after parting ways with Emirates and as a result of its frequent flyer programme, Srilankan Airlines launched its own programme known as FlySmiles.
Thanks to its commitment and growth in 2013, Srilankan Airlines received a special award of appreciation in recognition of its services in South Asia. In 2016 in order to further expand Srilankan Airlines absorbed the operations of Mihin Lanka. Over the years Srilankan Airlines has continued to grow and offer quality services, which has earned it the recognition of its customers. At the Golden City Gate Awards at the ITB Berlin in 2020, Srilankan Airlines received the First Star in the category “International Airline” as a token of its excellent service quality.
Spokesperson of SirLankan Airlines came forward and announced that the national carrier of Sri Lanka has full plans of increasing traffic which was halted due to pandemic. The airline even operated both cargo and commercial flights to and from India during the lockdown period but now is dedicated to offer a vast range of connections to Sri Lanka. Now is the time to create awareness about the flight because the inflow of tourists from India has significantly climbed up and Sri Lanka opened its doors to Indian travellers who were fully vaccinated. Hence, the airline would benefit if the Indian market is catered.
Cargo is a key activity for every airline and adding more flights for cargo is a major factor in the increase of traffic. When the aviation industry was hitting its lowest point, SirLankan Airlines tapped into new markets such as Nairobi, Moscow, Frankfurt, Sydney, Kathmandu and Paris with more destinations in the pipeline for the coming years. In addition, an increase in the flying frequency to and from India would bring greater convenience and choice to Indian passengers. Currently, SirLankan Airlines is serving 9 cities with 54 weekly flights.
